TV Booth ... Paul Schultz

In the beginning, the TV booth announcer was a staff position. A voice-over person was in the announce booth whenever a television station was on the air. The live staff announcer would voice any copy that arrived in the booth, live on the air. Everything live -- from news opens to promo tags, even commercial copy over a series of slides.

The industry evolved, and live announce was replaced by tape. Several staff announcer shifts a day were replaced by one, then several voice-over sessions a day replaced by one. Finally the staff announcer position was eliminated, and the voice-over duties were hired out. Initially a local voice talent was used; then advances in technology allowed stations to use out-of-town promotion voices.
